At the same time, I wonder whether Clay had a really bad 1500 experience (or two) early in his career in which he went out too hard, finished in 6-something, and maybe even lost a decathlon because of it, leading him to be much more cautious in the future. I'd like to believe that even if he hates the 1500 (as most decathletes probably do), he'd want to score as many points as possible.
